Dining and nutrition

Sunrise delivers exceptional care in every home, and we are proud to pair that with expertly crafted nutrition to give our residents the very best in dining.

We tailor menus to our residents' individual needs and continuously adjust our offering based on resident feedback and specialist nutritional advice.

Great food, passionately created

Our chefs produce three freshly produced meals a day, which can be eaten in our stunning communal dining areas or within the comfort of a resident's suite. Snacks and drinks are available 24 hours a day to suit each individual's needs.

We source ingredients from some of the nation's leading suppliers, including Donald Russell, the gourmet butcher the same butcher who supplies the British Royal Family, to ensure our dining experience is first class.

"Everything is top-notch, the food options, the activities team, the cleanliness and the genuine care and attention from all staff."

Delivering for our residents

In our Dementia neighbourhood, dedicated to those living with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia, we have bespoke hydration and snack stations, designed to enable healthy levels of fluid intake and nutrition.

Sunrise's dining team can create specialised meals to meet the specific nutritional requirements of residents who have special dietary needs - for example, residents living with high cholesterol or diabetes. For residents living with dysphagia – a condition which makes it hard to swallow – we prepare meals, pureed foods and smoothies that are easier to eat, while still maintaining the Sunrise quality. Sunrise’s Dining team is headed up by Giles Conroy, Head of Dining Services, and Sophie Murray, Head of Nutrition and Hydration.

Giles Conroy, Head of Dining Services

Giles has worked at Sunrise and Gracewell for 12 years. He started out as Head Chef at Sunrise of Bramhall, rising up the ranks to Executive Chef, devising menus for all 46 of our care homes. He was recently promoted to Head of Dining Services in August 2020.

Before joining the care sector, Giles was a high-end chef whose work took him from the corporate world of England’s four- and five-star hotels, to Spain, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Upon his return to the UK, he joined the kitchen of a bespoke unit caring for people with brain injuries, where he says his eyes were opened to a “different dimension of cooking.”

Giles is always looking ahead:

“My vision was to start from the floor up. With a changing age census, the landscape of the care sector is always changing. I always want us to be thinking outside the box with what we can do, continue to have a bespoke and tailored approach to our food, but ultimately, drive the message of the importance of family and a community home.”

Sophie Murray - Head of Nutrition and Hydration

Sophie has been a Registered Mental Health Nurse for over 20 years. She has spent a number of these years learning from and working with individuals living with dementia. Sophie enhanced her role by becoming a Nutritional Therapist in 2012. She also owned a successful restaurant, where she served front of house, collaborated with the chefs and oversaw quality. Sophie joined Sunrise and Gracewell in 2014 and has won numerous awards. For two years, she was a double winner of the prestigious Cateys Award for ‘Nutritional Champion of the Year’ and ‘Healthcare Caterer of the Year’.

She was appointed National Deputy Chair for the National Association for Care Catering (NACC) in 2017, and this role has enabled her to promote best practice and explore new ways of working to enhance the work of the sector. Sophie regularly speaks at events and is also a published writer for clinical and industry journals. She has also worked alongside celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager to raise the profile of food provision in the care sector.

“Not many organisations employ a Head of Nutrition who has a clinical background too - it shows how Sunrise prioritises this area and our awards and feedback is testament to our successes - we can go the extra mile and will always continue to strive”
