Meet Sunrise of Southbourne’s General Manager: Jo Pattison

One of the reasons why Sunrise of Southbourne is more than just a care community is the team of people working there. Every day, team members support our residents to enjoy life to the full and make Sunrise of Southbourne feel like home. Here, General Manager Jo Pattison speaks about her experience in care and why she loves her job.

I decided to work at Sunrise of Southbourne after a long and varied career working in social care for adults with learning disabilities for 15 years. My previous role was in operations, which I loved, but having done the role for a while I wanted to move my skills to a different sector. I found the Sunrise job and, seeing it as a new challenge, went along to the interview along with 25 other candidates.

I was lucky enough to get the job and have now been General Manager at Southbourne since October 2018, after previously undertaking the role of Deputy General Manager. I started the role under a trial and enjoyed making such good progress that I was given the role full-time.

What first attracted me to the care sector was the opportunity to work with other people. I have worked in the care sector ever since I left college, going into nursing and working for a healthcare company for three years until I decided to enter management. I’ve never looked back and now love talking, listening, watching and learning from people. Every day is different.

At Sunrise of Southbourne, I love the non-stop passion that the staff have for their roles. And when it comes to the residents themselves, they have such wonderful life experience and history, with great stories to share with us all. We will all be into our mature years in time to come and I want to have a life just like our residents, filled with delightful stories to tell.

For now, having just received our ‘Good’ CQG rating, I am working on making a Southbourne an ‘Outstanding’ community. We also have exciting plans for building innovative treatment and consultation rooms and providing more respite to families during holiday periods.

No day at Sunrise of Southbourne is the same and I never get tired, as there quite simply is no time to dwell. I really do love my role and look forward to a long career with Sunrise.
