The whole team at Sunrise of Eastbourne has been nominated for National Dementia Care’s Best Dementia Team Award.

The National Dementia Care Awards is a yearly event that recognises excellence in the dementia care sector. There are 16 categories at the awards which all focus on contributions that work towards making person-centred care a reality. The Sunrise of Eastbourne team are finalists in the Best Dementia Team category which recognises ‘a dementia-focused team that has developed and maintained a superb standard of care’.

They have made the final shortlist due to the innovative range of experiences they offer residents, the positive attitude of team members and their overall person-centred approach to care. Sunrise of Eastbourne’s Memory Care environment has seen the development of a range of engaging settings for residents to spend time in, including a community shop, cinema, in-house pub and life-skills station. Additionally, they personalise experiences to their residents’ wishes, they have taken people to football matches, ballet and one person in the later stages of dementia to see their niece perform at the Proms.

The care home has highly motivated staff who actively educate the local community about dementia. They have Dementia Champions who are trained to make the local area more friendly for residents and lead sessions to educate local organisations. The Memory Care neighbourhood at the care home has its own team library, where team members can access paid for monthly medical journals and books so they can stay on top of the latest knowledge. The team also voluntarily spend their own time putting on pantomime and talent shows. The nomination demonstrated that they take a completely person-centred approach to care.

Sunrise of Eastbourne is rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). They received ‘Outstanding’ ratings in four out of the five areas inspected: effective service, caring service, responsive service and well-led service. It also received a rating of ‘Good’ for the provision of safe care.

The awards are organised by The Journal of Dementia Care and the winners will be announced on Thursday 7th November at the Doncaster Racecourse.
