Carmela Magbitang has worked at Sunrise of Sonning for five years, after joining the care home in 2015.

Carmela acquired nursing qualifications in the Philippines in 1992 and started to practice as a General Nurse, she then moved to Saudi Arabia in 2003 to work as an A&E nurse. Carmela moved to the UK in 2005 and became a registered nurse. She worked at various nursing homes and hospices, before training as a palliative care nurse.

In 2015, Carmela joined the team at Sunrise of Sonning as Deputy Manager. In 2018, Carmela took on the role of General Manager, and by May 2018, Sunrise of Sonning was rated ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC. She said:

“I have a very strong sense of responsibility and I am always looking after people because I want to improve their lives. I want to ensure people are aware that nurses who work in care homes are extremely versatile, skilled, and knowledgeable.”

Carmela is consistently empowering every member of her team to improve their skills, gain knowledge and attain the relevant qualifications to become managers and coordinators. She also spearheaded the Student Nurse Placement Program with local universities, creating opportunities for Students to do their placement in a care home.

Carmela and her team were preparing for a potential rise in Covid-19 cases in the UK from a very early stage. As a result, Sunrise of Sonning have had no shortages of PPE and other crucial equipment. Under Carmela’s leadership, Sunrise of Sonning went into self-imposed lockdown a week before the national lockdown was announced.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Carmela has gone above and beyond for residents and her team. She introduced additional daily cleaning routines for the care home and delivered additional and compulsory training for the team on infection control procedures.

One member of the team at Sunrise of Sonning, shared a personal story exemplifying the incredible working environment Carmela has created:

“My ex-partner's parents kicked me out of their house - where I was living, because I worked in a care home. They were worried about the risk of Covid-19. It was 11pm on a Bank Holiday, with the country in national lockdown, and I had nowhere to go.

“Carmela put me up in one of the rooms at Sunrise of Sonning, and by the next day she had helped me to get emergency housing from the council.

“Carmela and the team have been so amazing. It has been a pleasure to work with such an incredible team through this difficult time.”
