Couple celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary at Sunrise of Winchester
Residents Jean and Knud recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a surprise party with cake and bubbly at Sunrise of Winchester.
Originally from Denmark, Knud was on a scholarship to work in the UK when the couple first met whilst working for publisher Hodder & Stoughton. They quickly fell for each other and Jean and Knud got married at 23 and 25 years old respectively. They have been keen travellers over the years living in Nigeria and several places in West Africa.
When questioned on the key to a successful marriage, Jean credits Knud’s sense of humour as being the factor that brought them together, but honesty and talking through problems as the reason for their relationship’s longevity.
They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at Sunrise of Winchester with their daughter and granddaughter. They were not aware that anybody knew about their milestone, so were quite taken aback when the Sunrise team came into the bistro singing Happy Anniversary to the tune of Happy Birthday and presented them with a cake, bottle of bubbly and flowers.
Louise Murkin, Activities and Volunteers Coordinator at Sunrise of Winchester, said:
“It is really special to see the bond that Jean and Knud have having been together so long. At Sunrise of Winchester we are one big community, so we definitely couldn’t let this milestone slip by without celebrating it.
“We take a personal interest in the lives of our residents and are always looking out for special occasions to celebrate.”
Jane, Jean and Knud’s daughter, said:
“My mother was taken completely by surprise – which is quite an achievement – and my father was the happiest I have seen him for a long time. It was the perfect way to celebrate their milestone.”
