  • ‘Outstanding’ rating received by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
  • Sunrise of Westbourne highlighted as “exceptionally caring”

Sunrise of Westbourne has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care services in England. Only 1% of care home providers across the country receive this rating.

The CQC rating was awarded following a comprehensive inspection in November 2018, making Sunrise of Westbourne one of the best care providers in the Bournemouth area.

Sunrise of Westbourne provides high quality, personalised nursing, dementia care and assisted living services, and can accommodate up to 114 older people in purpose built-premises. The residence is separated into two communities known as the ‘Assisted Living Community’ and the ‘Reminiscence Community,’ with the latter delivering specialist care for people living with dementia.

The CQC’s report highlighted that “the service was exceptionally caring,” with staff members who are “always kind and considerate and highly motivated to provide people with the best possible experience of living at the home.” Feedback from residents and their relatives demonstrated the “outstanding care and support” given, with one resident's family member saying: “Sunrise have been amazing at every stage of this process, and we all feel incredibly lucky to have found the right safe spot for Mum that nurtures her individuality.”

Inspectors also praised the responsiveness of the service provided at Sunrise of Westbourne. This included staff members ensuring that they “had a comprehensive knowledge of people’s needs, preferences and personal histories,” in a way which means people receive “personalised” care that meets their individual needs. As part of this, Sunrise was found to strongly emphasise the provision of activities that are “meaningful to the people living in the home,” delivered by staff from the activities department who are “very passionate about their role.”

Additionally, the CQC’s report deemed the leadership of the service to be ‘Outstanding.’ This included efforts of team leaders around “continually striving to improve the service,” through methods such as seeking and considering feedback of service users and staff members. Staff ensure they always give a “positive response” to any concerns raised, with one relative commenting: “Anything we needed and questions have always been quickly sorted. All staff have been so caring and friendly.”

The provision of exceptional management and care that always goes “the extra mile” was judged by inspectors to have created a “positive, welcoming and homely” atmosphere at the community. As the inspection found, “people received a high standard of care because staff and management put people first and at the heart of the service” – in a way which ensures staff members, residents and relatives can all be proud to be associated with Sunrise of Westbourne.

James Glanville, General Manager at Sunrise of Westbourne, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to have received an overall rating of ‘Outstanding’ from the Care Quality Commission, especially as the community was undergoing a refurbishment during the time of inspection.

“An ethos of providing personalised and attentive care has always been at the core of everything we do, and our team strive to deliver quality care day in day out.

“I am also thrilled to see that we received an ‘Outstanding’ rating in three of the inspection’s key lines of inquiry: caring service, responsive service and well-led service – an exceptional honour.

“We look forward to many more years of providing high quality care to our brilliant residents and their families.”

Joanne Balmer, Senior Director of Care and Quality at Sunrise Senior Living UK, said:

“I am so pleased to see Sunrise of Westbourne receive such amazing recognition for the extraordinary care they provide to residents. This rating is testament to the hard work of every single one of the community’s team members and we look forward to seeing what the future holds in store for them as they continue to drive improvement and excellence.”
