We recently interviewed Sunrise of Purley’s new General Manager, Tina Dawson. Here is what we asked her.
Are you local to the area?
I have lived in Kent for the last 10 years. I am from North London originally and spent time in Surrey, before settling in Kent. It’s a very straightforward journey by car or train to Purley.
In your opinion, what do you think makes Sunrise of Purley so special as a community? Why did you want to work there?
Sunrise of Purley is a really special community. As soon as you walk in, it’s like being part of a very large extended family. The atmosphere is friendly and it’s incredibly uplifting. Team members are loyal, keen and committed to residents. Everyone shares a laugh, sings and when you walk around, you can clearly see that team members and residents enjoy each other’s company. I wanted to join the Sunrise team because I love the organisation’s values and core beliefs. Over the years, I have heard so much about Sunrise, and so I wanted to come and experience it all for myself.
What are you hoping to achieve in your role at Purley?
An ‘Outstaning’ CQC rating.
How long have you worked in the care sector and what are your favourite aspects of working in care?
I have worked as a manager since my youngest son was three. He is now 17 years old – so, 14 years. Before becoming a manager, I qualified as a nurse in North London. I worked in various roles within the NHS and the private sector, and then joined the care sector in 2005. I love working in care, and I have many favourite aspects: Ensuring residents and their families are happy, content and feel supported from the moment they move in. When they feel like they are living in their own home, you know you have done your job.
I also enjoy the team dynamics – how everyone works together to ensure the work is completed to a high standard. It is amazing when new team members join, gain confidence and experience and work their way up. I also love the business side of things – looking at the bigger picture and planning ahead! Making sure that we are the best we can be.
