Sunrise of Southbourne resident, Rita Frazer, who is 90 years old, loves to keep fit. She visits the Littledown Centre gym twice a week and enjoys taking part in the community’s regular activities – ranging from Tai Chi, yoga, balance and sitting exercise classes.

Rita was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2014, which affects her lungs, breathing and motor skills. The regular exercise helps her manage the condition and keeps her free from the symptoms.

Lee Mussell, Director of Community Relations at Sunrise of Southbourne, said:

“Rita is such an active and sociable person. She is always on the internet and enjoys talking to others and sharing stories. She also has an absolute passion for food. She likes to have a say in what meals are prepared for the care home and liaises with the chef regularly. Rita is an ambassador for Utility Warehouse and still recruits people today! We all think Rita is amazing and it’s so great to be able to see her manage her symptoms and her condition, without letting it affect her. She is an inspiration.”

Rita said:

“I know how important exercising and keeping my mind working is and I truly believe that more seniors like me should use the gym. It really does keep the doctor away. My advice to you all, whatever age you are, is to keep active. Avoid getting bored and fill your lives with things that can keep your mind and body healthy. You are never too old!”

Rita left school at 14 with a shorthand typing certificate. She went on to work at a local newsagent and served customers, and then moved to work for building and planning companies, before becoming a typist for a courtroom. She was quickly promoted to the clerical office and stayed there for 20 years.

Rita met her husband Eric when she was in her early 70s. They were both volunteers (known as House Stewards) at Kingston Lacey. They have been married for 21 years.

Rita retired at the age of 60, but got bored quickly, so she went back to work. Rita and Eric moved into Sunrise of Southbourne care home together on 16th April 2018.
