Residents and team members at Sunrise of Southbourne care home are now over 4 weeks into their 12-week journey visiting new countries each week from the comfort of their care home.
Now, one month in, they have visited France, England, Italy, and Greece, celebrating each country by organising various activities and events. Residents have taken part in language lessons, virtual tours of famous landmarks, enjoyed local music, and experienced each country’s culinary delights as prepared by the care home’s dining team.
In week one residents boarded the Sunrise of Southbourne cruise to France. Here, they indulged in French culture, enjoying wine and cheese tasting, as well as receiving a first-hand account of France from Southbourne’s very own French Carer, Claude (Sammuller), who spoke about his experiences in his homeland.
The following week they were back on home shores in the UK, where they enjoyed a very British afternoon tea accompanied by piano music played by (Concierge) Rick (Pearce). Sunrise of Southbourne also took part in the South West pub quiz where they competed against other care homes in the South West region. Unfortunately, they were not victorious, just missing out to Sunrise of Cardiff, but gave a good showing nonetheless. The week was concluded with a St George’s themed pantomime performed by team members, which was loved by all the residents.
Their visit back home was short but sweet, with another trip to Italy the following week. Here residents enjoyed some limoncello and Italian biscuit tasting, before later learning about the art of Italian ballet and its various moves and techniques, which several residents tried out.
Most recently Sunrise of Southbourne took a trip across the Mediterranean to Greece. Residents thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of Ouzo and a Greek mezze board with delightful foods for all to try. Later into the evening, after a few traditional drinks, residents took part in some Greek dancing, before finishing off the week with a Mammia Mia singalong together with all the team members.
Vera Murry, a resident at the care home said, “I have learnt so much about each country we have been to and especially those countries that I have never had the opportunity to go to. It has been wonderful to learn more about them”, adding that she has also, “enjoyed trying the different foods from each country too.”
Maureen O’Callaghan, also a resident at Sunrise of Southbourne, added, “I enjoyed seeing some of the places that I have visited in the past, it brought back so many memories that I had forgotten about. I really enjoyed the food from each country and enjoyed all the different smells and tastes.”
For the remaining eight weeks, Sunrise of Southbourne will go on to visit countries including South Africa, Mexico, China and India.
The extensive travel itinerary has been launched as part of Sunrise Senior Living UK’s #NewDawnNewDay campaign to encourage those who may be considering moving into a care home to take the step with a sense of reassurance in this new chapter of their lives.
