Residents and team members at Sunrise of Esher have set sail on a 12-week journey visiting new countries each week, from the comfort of their care home.
One month in, and the care home has visited France, England, Italy and Greece. During these weeks, they have celebrated each country by organising various activities and events. Residents have taken part in language lessons, virtual tours of famous landmarks, enjoyed local music, and experienced each country’s culinary delights as prepared by the care home’s dining team.
In week one, residents jetted off to France, where they had so much fun on a walking guided tour. They stopped off at a French-themed market, with Euros, and even enjoyed a resident versus team members France-themed quiz.
The following week, residents visited England just in time for St George’s Day. Residents visited a British-themed market, painted some canal boats, and read some Shakespearean poetry. They finished off the trip with Sunrise of Esher’s very own East End pub – Esher Enders – where residents sipped on gin and tonic while they took part in a cockney rhyming slang quiz.
Residents then set off on a gondola to Italy, where they had so much fun making pizza. They spent Euros at the Italian market, took part in an Italian-themed quiz and an afternoon party in the care home’s lovely garden.
Most recently, residents set off to Greece, where they got active in a ‘Zorba the Greek’ exercise class. They learned more about Ancient Greece in a professional zoom talk class, smashed some plates and then attended a Greek Mese Party.
One resident at Sunrise of Esher, said:
“I really look forward to the different countries we are visiting, the team members are putting a lot of effort into this, and their costumes are brilliant. The best bits of the week for me are the Walking Guided Tour which the team are putting together with cardboard cut-outs, it is amazing what you learn even at my age! It is all such great fun.”
Another resident added:
“The team members are doing a fabulous job at putting all of this together. I have been to all of the countries we have visited so far and was able to contribute to the table displays that the team members put together each week with all the countries own produce. I really look forward to seeing the costumes that the team members are putting together.”
Joanna Perry, Director of Community Relations at Sunrise of Esher, said:
“We have had a wonderful time on our travels so far, and we are all so excited for the next eight weeks of fun-filled activities. Residents have absolutely loved visiting all the different countries, it has been lovely to see the world from the comfort of our home.”
The extensive travel itinerary has been launched as part of Sunrise Senior Living UK’s #NewDawnNewDay campaign to encourage those who may be considering moving into a care home to take the step with a sense of reassurance in this new chapter of their lives.
