Residents and team members at Sunrise of Cardiff care home are now over 4 weeks into their 12-week journey visiting new countries each week from the comfort of their care home.
Now, one month in, they have visited France, the UK, Italy, and Greece, celebrating each country by organising various activities and events. Residents have taken part in language lessons, virtual tours of famous landmarks, enjoyed local music, and experienced each country’s culinary delights as prepared by the care home’s dining team.
In week one, residents and team members boarded the ‘Sunrise of Cardiff Cruiser’ for a trip to France. Here, they were immersed in French culture, learning useful language phrases, cooking croissants, and playing games such as ‘guess the weight of the baguette’, and Pétanque. Later into the week, the dining team excelled themselves with a French themed menu, including a delicious homemade brioche bread and butter pudding, which has since received requests to stay as a permanent menu item.
The residents then arrived back in the UK for a fun filled week. Team members dressed up in outfits of iconic British figures, including Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill and the Queen herself. The care home also entered into a general knowledge quiz on British culture where they competed with other homes and communities in the Wales and West region, which they won. After a much-enjoyed week, and victory in the quiz, residents were treated to a dinner of traditional fish and chips in newspaper.
Their trip home was short but sweet, with a visit to Italy the following week. With no journey to the country complete without its food, residents and team members took part in a pizza making competition, with prizes awarded to the winning teams. After their meal, residents settled down to listen to performances of Italian opera, as well as performances by Care Assistant Nadia Lampis who sang Arias, and Dining Coordinator, John Chichister who dressed as Pavarotti and gave the ladies roses during his ‘show’. The week was made even more memorable with some entertaining outfits, the best being team members Lauren McGlynn and Sue Pain who donned Super Mario Bros costumes.
Most recently, the care home headed a short distance across the Mediterranean to Greece. Another fantastic week included reflections by the residents about their previous memories and travels to the country, providing some fascinating stories and real insight into some of the lesser-known islands, and learning about the culture of the nation. Team members also provided another week of costumes including Toga and Roman Centurion outfits, as well as a surprise appearance from Zeus. To round off their excursion, the dining team again showcased their creativity, with a Greek inspired menu of Souvlaki, moussaka and Greek salad with various accompaniments, along with some great Zorba dancing entertainment performed by team members.
Speaking of the campaign so far, resident at Sunrise of Cardiff, Maggie said: “I loved the week in Greece as this is where I have spent many holidays travelling around the islands. I gave a little talk to some of the other residents and team members about the history of several of the islands and mythology. It brought back such lovely memories.”
Peter, also at the care home, added, “I’m a traditionalist and I loved our week in the UK. I have travelled a lot around this wonderful country of ours and I was able to help our team to win various quizzes due to my knowledge of castles. I am very proud of this knowledge, even though my wife thinks it’s boring! The fish and chips were wonderful, and we reminisced about our times on British beaches when the children were little.”
For the remaining eight weeks, Sunrise of Cardiff will go on to visit countries including South Africa, Mexico, China and India.
The extensive travel itinerary has been launched as part of Sunrise Senior Living UK’s #NewDawnNewDay campaign to encourage those who may be considering moving into a care home to take the step with a sense of reassurance in this new chapter of their lives.
