Residents and team members at Sunrise of Bassett care home are now over 4 weeks into their 12-week journey visiting new countries each week from the comfort of their care home.
Now, one month in, they have visited France, England, Italy and Greece, celebrating each country by organising various activities and events. Residents have taken part in language lessons, virtual tours of famous landmarks, enjoyed local music, and experienced each country’s culinary delights as prepared by the care home’s dining team.
In their first week residents headed to the heart of France, Paris. Preparing French decorations, including bunting and flower arrangements with the national colours, team members and residents alike then arrived dressed in French themed outfits for a sampling of fine tarts, and classical piano music at the Café De Paris, with a glass of champagne to celebrate Sunrise of Bassett team members’ Long Service Award.
The residents then arrived back in England for their second week. Graced with unexpectedly good British weather, they hosted a Great British Garden Party on their beautiful lawn, with team members dressing in costumes from Alice in Wonderland. Over the next few days residents got stuck into several traditional British games, as well as an Interactive Quiz, and even received a special visit from the British Bulldog! In honour of the Duke of Edinburgh, everybody at the home held a minute silence and reflected upon their memories of him - one resident revealed they had even met Prince Philip before he had married the Queen.
Their visit back home was short but sweet, with a trip to Italy the following week. Treated to a real Milan experience, team members put together an Italian Fashion show, showcasing 11 outfits that captured styles by famous Italian designers from the 1940s all the way to the 2000s - residents absolutely loved it! With no Italian experience complete without food, an Italian chef later into the week facilitated a hilarious interactive pizza demonstration for the residents.
Most recently, the care home travelled to Greece. During this trip residents took part in an oral history activity, where they spoke on several Greek objects and shared their own personal memories and experiences of the country over the years. Fortunate to have their own personal Greek team member at Sunrise of Bassett, Dora agreed to teach everybody some Greek dancing, with some residents even taking up the challenge and tying up their dancing shoes! After such laughter and excitement, the dining team prepared a delicious Greek meze for residents and the team to sample, as well as treating all to some plate spinning entertainment (with residents even getting involved after food).
Speaking on the campaign, Kim Harding, the General Manager of Sunrise of Bassett, said:
“It’s been a great experience so far and the residents are thoroughly enjoying themselves! The campaign has really lifted everybody’s spirits and the work the team have put into each week has been phenomenal. We can’t wait for the visits still to come!”
For the remaining eight weeks, Sunrise of Bassett will go on to visit countries including South Africa, Mexico, China and India.
The extensive travel itinerary has been launched as part of Sunrise Senior Living UK’s #NewDawnNewDay campaign to encourage those who may be considering moving into a care home to take the step with a sense of reassurance in this new chapter of their lives.
