Residents and team members at Sunrise of Westbourne care home are now well over four weeks into their 12-week journey visiting new countries each week from the comfort of their care home.
Over a month in, they have visited France, England, Italy, and Greece, celebrating each country by organising various activities and events. Residents have taken part in language lessons, virtual tours of famous landmarks, enjoyed local music, and experienced each country’s culinary delights as prepared by the care home’s dining team.
In week one, Sunrise of Westbourne boarded the cruiser for a trip across the channel to France. Arriving dressed in berets and scarfs, residents and team members relished a true Parisian Day. After enjoying French music in a bistro, later into the afternoon residents took a sight-seeing visit through the city for a photoshoot at the Eiffel Tower.
The residents then arrived back in the UK just in time to celebrate an event filled week. To mark their trip back home, Sunrise of Westbourne enjoyed some afternoon tea and an insightful presentation on the history of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland by Senior Carer Peter. The care home then took a trip to the capital where residents took photos of the royal guards at Buckingham Palace. The fantastic week was closed off with a quiz night and a traditional ‘knees up’ singalong.
However, their visit back home was short but sweet, as they packed their bags yet again for another trip abroad, this time to Italy. With no visit to the country complete without its food, residents and team members enjoyed an amazing selection of pasta dishes throughout the week, provided by the fantastic catering team at Sunrise of Westbourne. Residents also got the opportunity to visit the famous ‘Leaning Tower of Pisa’, as well as 20 famous locations around the country.
Most recently, the care home headed a short distance across the Mediterranean to Greece. Another fantastic week of activities included a fascinating historical presentation on the origins and traditions of the country, as well as an afternoon social where residents enjoyed a delightful array of Greek food. To close off the week, residents and team members were treated to Greek songs sung by a guest vocalist.
Speaking of the campaign so far, one resident at Sunrise of Westbourne, said: “Peter’s talks on each country were excellent and very informative. I have thoroughly enjoyed each week so far.”
Another resident noted their enjoyment of the week, adding that, “It has been such a good idea. Each visit has been very unusual and different, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the photoshoot each week.”
The extensive travel itinerary has been launched as part of Sunrise Senior Living UK’s #NewDawnNewDay campaign to encourage those who may be considering moving into a care home to take the step with a sense of reassurance in this new chapter of their lives.
