Sunrise of Hale Barns Organises Virtual Activities for Local School Children and Care Home Residents

Before Covid-19, local children from St Ambrose School would regularly visit Sunrise of Hale Barns to take part in intergenerational activities organised by the care home’s dedicated Activities Team.

These regular visits had to be paused due to the Covid-19 pandemic and social distancing restrictions, however, Sunrise of Hale Barns and St Ambrose School have ensured that residents and children have kept in contact.

Each week, a zoom call in arranged on a Thursday. The children speak to the residents - they ask them how their week has been, and tell the residents what they have been up to at school. The children will often show residents arts and crafts they have made in the classroom, too.

Activities Coordinator at Sunrise of Hale Barns, Regina Faria, has worked above and beyond to ensure activities at the home continue despite new guidelines and restrictions, she is passionate about keeping residents engaged and active.

One resident at Sunrise of Hale Barns, Shirley, said:

“I really enjoy the Zoom chats; it has been a new way of doing things since the pandemic and has allowed us to keep in touch with the children as they can’t come in and see us like they used to. We have great fun!”

Head of Early Years at St Ambrose School, Mrs Conroy, said:

“The boys look forward to our Zoom chats every week and thoroughly enjoy interacting with the residents to tell them what they have been learning about each week! They also like to show anything they have made, one week they liked showing the puppets they have sewn.”

Sharon Parkes, Director of Community Relations at Sunrise of Hale Barns, added:

“The visits from St Ambrose School have always brought such joy to our residents at Sunrise of Hale Barns, they love hearing about what the children have been up to. Thanks to technology, we are so happy we have been able to continue the intergenerational meet-ups.

“We look forward to welcoming them back to Sunrise of Hale Barns in person one day soon!”
