A Residents Perspective On Selecting Sunrise

The following is an abridged testimonial from a gentleman residing at Sunrise of Weybridge and outlines his reasoning behind choosing Sunrise...

Last month my family and many friends celebrated my 90th birthday with me. Nearly two years ago I moved to a kind of “4 star” newly-built residential home (“assisted living community for senior citizens”). Readers may like to know why and how I came to make this change of life and how it has worked out.

Back in 2005 (I had then been widowed about four years) I realised it was time to think about a change to some kind of sheltered accommodation, even though I was still coping quite well.

I had to develop a set of precise criteria against which to assess the various options. Thus a kind of feasibility study took shape, but it was like choosing the right feedstock for a plant, where you did not quite know what product it had to make! The study covered the different facilities available (e.g. retirement flats with or without wardens, residential homes, nursing homes, etc.) and their location, also health and psychological factors, proximity to family or friends and, of course, the financial implications (the “feasibility” part of the study).

Finally, after having a good look at two establishments owned by the same company and run on the same lines, I decided to come here (Sunrise of Weybridge), thus staying on in Weybridge, close to many friends, some even within walking distance. I was able to pick my rooms from the floor plan drawings and set in motion the complicated process of carrying out such a fundamental change.

Have I done the right thing? I have no doubt about it. I am very comfortable and well looked after by some really super carers and other staff. As I still drive, I continue to see my friends, go to concerts etc. and indulge in my two hobbies (playing the piano and playing bridge). There is also an active programme of social activities and some very nice fellow residents for company, but perhaps the real bonus is that I have virtually no household chores, nor the need to worry about say, the boiler packing up in mid-winter or the roof leaking in pouring rain!

Finally what have I learned that could benefit others who have to think of such matters? Since we are all different, other people will have different needs and priorities, but whatever those turn out to be, finding the right answer is hard work and takes a lot of time. Furthermore the longer one leaves it, the harder it gets.

good wishes

Sunrise of Weybridge Now Offering Nursing Care

What does it mean for our residents?
Sunrise of Weybridge will remain the same comfortable, homelike and enjoyable place to live, but now we are extending our care services so that additional nursing will be available 24 hours a day. It means that residents and families have the reassurance of knowing that if nursing care is required later, Sunrise can provide it.

The new registration is also an acknowledgment of our competency and expertise in caring. We have been participating in rigorous training to ensure that all residents receive the best assistance and care possible. But the really good news…As a result of our new registration it means that residents assessed to receive nursing care will be eligible for NHS Funded Nursing Care contributions. This is an amount of £108.70 per week paid as a contribution towards your weekly fees.

Talk to us soon about the process to get an assessment made and we'll help to make it happen.

A Residents Thoughts On Coming To Sunrise...

Coming to Sunrise (of Weybridge) has given me a new outlook on the third phase of my life. No more wariness about the fabric of a building, or the problem of caring for a garden. Stairs replaced by a lift, housework, cooking and laundry all taken care of by a team of friendly people. Everyday life can be as busy or as quiet as you wish and the opportunity to entertain friends and relatives anywhere within the Sunrise complex will ease feelings of loneliness.

The most difficult situation I had to overcome, was leaving my home, but in time, the realisation that there are people around you who care and the security that offers, outweighs the trauma of moving.
