Making time for yourself
Sometimes, caring for a loved one – maybe a parent – while trying to juggle your other family commitments can feel like an impossible balancing act. You want to try and keep everyone happy, but in the absence of proper information for carers, it’s hard to find the time or energy to give all the members of your family the attention they deserve. It can be an increasingly stressful time. But there are a few measures you can take to try and find a better balance.
Keep your family involved
Make sure your family understands how important it is for you to care for your loved one and explain to them everything that is involved in caring for parents at home. Sit down together and draw up a weekly schedule so everyone is aware of your plans. Make sure you ask for their advice and involve them in any decisions that could affect them.
Understand your loved one’s needs
If your loved one is living with a specific condition, learn everything you can about it. Research online, ask your GP and think about how you can best help them. Aim to provide the most appropriate care while always respecting their independence.
Don’t overdo it
Eat well, stay rested and exercise regularly. It’s important you give yourself time to unwind with your family too. Get to learn your limits and make sure you plan in regular breaks.
