Long distance carers
It’s not uncommon for family members to live tens or even hundreds of miles apart. When everyone is healthy, phone calls and visits can easily bridge the gap. But when it comes to caring for parents or elderly relatives who may be ill, the distance can become an obstacle.
Simple tasks like arranging transport to the doctor can become a major challenge. One easy step you can take is to set up an emergency plan.
Gather information
First, gather all the information that a GP or nurse might need about your loved one. This includes date of birth and basic medical history - including current medications and dosage – as well as details of any health insurance.
Friends and neighbours
Make sure you’re introduced to your loved one’s friends and neighbours. Ask for their phone numbers in case you ever need to speak to them, and see if your loved one can leave a spare set of keys with someone they trust. Also ensure you know where your loved one keeps any essential documents in their home.
Look at full time care options
As ever, your local Sunrise community can discuss any issues or concerns you may have about long distance caregiving. Simply get in touch and we can discuss your options. Or better still, pop in and see us. We’re here to help – even if all you need at this stage is some clear advice.
